The Creative Commons is a non-profit organization devoted to expanding the range of creative work available for others legally to build upon and share.
A good starting point is the Content Curators list on the Creative Commons Wiki.
Content hosts and communities like CCMixter, Internet Archive, and OpSound all have great content willing to be discovered.
There are many blogs and podcasts specialized in CC tracks like CC365, Starfrosch and Uwe Hermann that always present nice bands. You can also try the ever growing number of different netlabels.
To be promoted to the Hits page, a track must reach a certain popularity score. Votes, comments, and plays are considered in this score.
Every track enters the system through the add form and goes to the recent tracks page. On this page you can vote for the tracks you like and raise more votes by using the share button or making useful comments.
We do not endorse cheating. Cheaters can be reported using the "Report this App" link at the Ningbar on the right, and can be banned from the system or have their permissions limited.
Please don't.
If you cannot find a license note on the website that hosts the track, chances are that it might have all rights reserved even though it is publicly available on the web. Our focus and objective here is to be a source for music with a well-defined set of permissions.
That does not mean that you can't, as a fan, introduce the artist to Creative Commons and ask him gently for a share-friendly release; there are many flavors of licenses that offer a a flexible range of protections.
No.
There are plenty of other websites and services that allow you to do that, including some cloned versions of CCHits that accept links to non-CC tracks.
The main focus here is for CC compatible licensed material only. Entries linking copyrighted tracks are removed from the public lists by the editors.
No.
If the license is not on the Add Track form's list, it is probably because its legal text does not grant worldwide permisson for anyone to distribute the whole work.
But eventually the list may need updates, if you think you found a compatible license that is not listed and want to include it, please send a message to the CCHits discussion group.
Most of the track lists on the system is available in Media RSS feed format, also known as podcasts. This can be used by music programs and aggregators like iTunes and Juice to schedule automatic downloads to your home computer or portable music device.
On the top right corner of the track list screen there is a link to the RSS feed. You can copy this address and on iTunes paste it under the menu "Advanced > Subscribe to Podcast...".
